Striking surgical instrument case made in Austria in 1895. This case and all the instruments it contains belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Army, Model 1895 and were most surely used during the I World War. This is a unique article because of its ancient age, its surprisingly good condition (it keeps every one of its pieces) and the beauty of the box where the utensils are stored. The set of utensils has some standard and scissor thongs in different sizes, scalpels, a saw for cutting bones and some other accessories, even suture thread. All the pieces are part of an inventory printed in a card which comes into the case, where we can read a list of utensils in German.The tools are carefully stored in their own compartments into the case and are disposed into the case, its lid and its removable tray. The metal they are made of is very remarkable because its great condition; it is shiny, soft and with almost no flaws or rust.The case also has mobile wooden pieces designed to stop the utensils from moving. This set was made by Odelga Brand (Wien-Budapest); we can read this name on a plate attached to the inside of the lid.The case is made of solid wood: outside it boasts a dark brown walnut finish, while the inside has no finish at all and the wood is in its natural color. The box is made of beech, a sold and durable kind of wood. There is an oval silvery plate with a German inscription attached to the top of the lid: KLEINER CHIRURG INSTRUMENTENKASTEN 1895 (small surgical instruments case, 1895). One of the cases sides keeps the original metal handle and on the other we can see a curious small steel door with a shutting hook, designed to store the cases key. This key comes with the article too and can be used to lock and unlock the case.This surgical instruments case from the late 19th century is not only a fully historical piece, but also an attractive and curious item fit to enhance the best showcase with a collection of military, medical and scientific antiques.Measurements: Width: 280 mm.
