Curious and attractive electro-medical device made in the early 1900s by a company founded by electrical engineer Charles Chardin from Paris. Chardin was a prestigious designer and manufacturer of medical machines who also published books about electrotherapy and attended great exhibitions, such as the one organized in Paris in 1889 where he was awarded the silver medal. This machine is a good sample of his work, and has survived to our days practically complete and in excellent condition. This device is designed to apply electric current to patients in order to treat different diseases and lesions.Electrotherapy was quite popular between the 19 and 20th centuries, being a widely accepted medical therapy. It is an ancient technique as Romans already applied using electric shocks provided by rays (fish). Nowadays scientists still study and apply it, mainly in the field of rehabilitation. This particular machine comes into a lovely mahogany case, well preserved and boasting a deep reddish color. Inside there is a galvanometer (a device used to measure the electric current), some acid batteries that generated electric energy and different compartments with attachments needed for the therapy. This kit is complete except for the missing tongs that were stored in the bottom compartment. The rest of the utensils are in perfect condition, as shiny and attractive as when they were made. The galvanometer bears a printed inscription: CHARLES CHARDIN, PARIS. It is the manufacturers name and it is also engraved in the green-enameled metal plate attached to the inside of the lid. Again, outside there is a label just under the metal handle with a nice drawing depicting the medals awarded to Chardin and a lightning strike symbolizing electric energy. The label also bears the initials C. Ch. The mahogany case keeps the original handle and shutting devices, made of nickel-finished metal and with delicate ornamental engravings. This amazing Charles Chardin machine is as original as historical. The beauty of the materials it is made of, its great condition and high attractive making turn it into a luxury item that any lover of medical antiques will undoubtedly appreciate.Measurements (closed): Width: 280 mm.
