Antique microscope made by E. Leitz in Wetzlar (Germany) in 1920. Being more than ninety hundred years old, this scientific instrument has survived to our days in quite good condition. The microscope works fine and comes in its original case, made of solid mahogany wood. It is made of black-enameled iron with silvery metal mobile parts. The original finish is well preserved and so is the metal, whose surface only shows slight signs of the trace of time. All the rack and pinion elements work smoothly for and easy use of the microscope. The turret bears and engraved inscription with the manufacturers name, E. LEITZ WETZLAR, and the serial number 187375. This is the name of one of the most prestigious optical material manufacturers in Germany. The firm was founded by Carl Kellner in Wetzlar (Germany) in 1849, as an Optical Institute. After Kellners deceasement, his widow married an apprentice called Behltle and he took over the firm. In 1963 Enrst Leitz joined the Institute and by 1865 became a full partner. When Behltle died, Leitz became the sole owner of the firm and changed its name to E. Leitz Wetzlar. The last member of the Leitz family retired from the board of directors in 1986; in 1988, the Wild Leitz Group was broken into smaller companies. The eyepiece inserted in the microscopes turret was made by another manufacturer. At its top we can see an inscription reading PLANACHROM 6 NACHET PARIS. On the other hand, the three-lens revolving nosepiece this instrument mounts has Leitz lenses with the engraved logo and their respective serial number. All this instruments parts and components are original and so is the fine solid mahogany case where it can be stored. This case has delicate dovetail joints, skillfully performed and quite solid. It is in quite good condition and preserves it original warm finish that enhances the lovely golden red color of the wood. This great microscope is a witness to the scientific work performed in the early 20th century, being also a decorative and functional piece.Measurements: Width: 140 mm.
