Antique and stylized microscope made in Germany in the early 10th century (1903) by E. Leitz Wetzlar. The microscope is in amazing condition, especially if we consider its ancient age - more than one hundred years old. It comes in its original case made of solid mahogany wood and with silvery metal handle. The microscope mounts a two-lens revolving nosepiece and black-enameled cast-iron bird claw foot. The top part is composed of golden brass and silvery metal mobile parts, in good condition and working fine. The bases rear leg bears an engraved inscription with the manufacturers name and the instruments serial number: E. Leitz Wetlzar Nº 71333. This company started out in 1849, when Carl Kellner founded the Optical Institute of Wetzlar in the German city of the same name. In the beginning the manufactured mainly telescopes but with the trace of time the production of microscopes and component parts began to displace the rest of the products. In 1865 Ernst Leitz entered the company and after only four years took control of the firm. It changed its name for Optical Institute of Ernst Leitz, and subsequently, E. Leitz Wetzlar. This microscope provides an impeccable working order thanks to its quality lenses and component parts. The lenses are signed with the manufacturers name and bear the magnification number engraved in the metal. The case is made of solid mahogany wood and contains two stands made of the same material (for the lenses and eyepieces) and a box for sample plates. Inside the door we find a metal plate with the name of the shop where the microscope was originally purchased; it was located in Edinburgh. The microscopes serial number is engraved in the top edge of the cases door. This antique microscope is a real museum piece, perfect to decorate a sober study or to become part of a great collection.
