This curious and fine instrument is a rare portable microscope that can be folded and unfolded. It was manufactured by the prestigious German company E. Leitz Wetzlar in the early 20th century, in 1901. The microscope is wonderfully preserved and works perfectly, letting the user watch the samples neatly and clearly. It mounts three-lens revolving nosepiece and comes with an extra eyepiece. The stage with the clips can be folded to one side and the legs also move so the microscope can be comfortably stored into its case. The microscopes foot is composed of two foldable black-enameled cast-iron legs. The enamel finish is slightly worn by the trace of time and use, but it is mainly in good condition. One of the iron legs bears the engraved inscription E. Leitz Wetzlar Nº 61562, corresponding to the manufacturers name and the instruments serial number. Ernst Leitz entered the Optical Institute of Wetzlar in 1865 and just four years later he took control of the company, changing its name for Optical Institute of Ernst Leitz. With the trace of time, the firm became known just as E. Leitz Wetzlar. The top part of the microscope (composed of the turret, the revolving nosepiece and the mobile screws and component parts) is made of golden brass. The metal still preserves the original transparent lacquer finish. The lenses also bear the engraved manufacturer´s name; inside the case we can see a series of brass sleeves designed to protect them, as well as two eyepieces. At the top of the case there is a small compartment that contains two glass filters, a colorless one and a blue one. As rare as interesting, this astonishing foldable microscope is a collectors piece, full of charm and very antique. Measurements: Width: 5.5 in / 14 cm. Height: 1.5 in / 32 cm.
