The microscope comes in its original mahogany wooden case, also very well preserved inside we can also find two wooden stands to store the lenses and eyepieces and a small box with sliding lid to store tools and accessories. The microscopes lacquered cast-iron foot shows a discreet engraved inscription with the manufacturers name (E. Leitz Wetzlar) and the articles serial number: Nº 70745. The name refers to Ernst Leitz, an optical engineer that in 1864 entered the Kellner Optical Institute. This company was located in Wetzlar, Germany and their microscopes were famous all over the world. Leitzs arrival gave the firm a great boost as it was declining since the death of Kellner in 1855. Leitz designed new microscopes and components and in 1868 took over the firm and changed its name for his own. In the following years the company also manufactured other products such as the famous Leica cameras. This lovely microscope has a black-lacquered cast-iron foot that supports a set of golden brass component parts. The metal preserves the original transparent lacquer. The microscope mounts a two-lens revolving nosepiece; the lenses are signed by E. Leitz Wetlzar too. The mahogany wooden case bears the microscopes serial number engraved in one of its parts; this fact indicates that it is the original one. It preserves the lock and the key in working order and also keeps the original metal handle and keyhole. Inside the door there is a paper sheet with handwritten information about the lenses.
