This beautiful microscope is an exclusive piece, made in England in the late 19th century (circa 1900) and in very good condition. The microscope comes in its original solid wooden case with an antique accessory set, also original from the period. The set includes two extra pairs of lenses and eyepieces and a magnifier. There are also two empty brass sleeves designed to contain lenses. The case has been carefully adapted in order to store these extra sleeves by adding a solid wooden piece that mixes discreetly with the rest of the box. The cast-iron tripod that acts as the microscopes base bears the engraved manufacturers name, J. SWIFT & SON LONDON P.A. CORNISH. The company was founded in London, 1853 by James Powel Swift. In 1881 the firm improved the standard microscopes design by including a more efficient focus system. Ten years later they launched the first petrologic microscope. In 1946 R.Watts & Son Ltd. took over the company mainly because of the association between both families in the early days. In 1968 the firm was eventually acquired by John. H. Basset. This microscope shows a very special design, somewhat different from the standards of the period. It is made of golden brass, remaining in excellent condition and preserving the original transparent lacquer. The microscopes body is supported by a cast-iron tripod that includes the sample plate too. It mounts a two-lens revolving nosepiece, both original and in great condition. As stated before, the device comes in an antique mahogany case with the original lock and key in perfect working order. The beauty and functionality of this lovely antique microscope have not been altered by the trace of time. It is still an amazing piece that every collector will long to own. Measurements: Width: 7.8 in / 20 cm. Height: 14.1 in / 36 cm.
