Striking antique W. Watsons & Sons microscope with two positions (vertical and horizontal), in excellent condition. This piece comes from England and was made circa 1900. Though it is more than one hundred years old, the microscope preserves all its original component parts and works really well. It comes in its original solid wooden box that also serves as the microscopes base. The brass pieces are in amazing condition, with no traces of rust or worn and with the original transparent lacquer. The arm that supports the sample plate bears the following engraved inscription: W. Watsons & Sons, Ltd. London. The serial number 17747 is engraved under it. The firm was founded in London in 1837 by William Watson to sell slides, lanterns and similar items. In 1868 it changed its name to W. Watsons & Sons and established in 313 High Holborn, where it remained until the 1940s. In the late 1870s the company started to sell photographic equipment and in 1908 acquired its definite name, W. Watsons & Sons Ltd. The firm dissolved in 1948. As stated before, the most interesting feature of this microscope is the capacity of being assembled vertically (classic design) and horizontally, just like a telescope. The wooden case where the device is stored serves as a base to assemble it in both positions. It has three screwed pieces designed to mount the microscope and the oscillating mirror in a stable way. The case is made of light-colored mahogany wood and is in great condition, preserving also the original brass hinge. Because of its curious configuration and high quality, this microscope deserves an honor place in any self-respecting collection. Measurements (Vertical): Width: 11.8 in / 30 cm. Height: 14.9 in / 38 cm.
