Big-sized antique compound microscope, made by Charles Baker in London in the mid-19th century (circa 1870) and in great condition. This striking scientific research instrument is a real museum piece for its quality, ancient age and big size. It comes in its original oak wooden case, almost a small cabinet with a drawer for the accessories, golden brass knob and moldings. The microscope comes with a wide array of accessories including three lenses in their respective brass sleeves (signed by the manufacturer), two eyepieces, a shutter, a magnifier to concentrate light on the samples and some utensils to prepare them. The microscope boasts an impressive condition with no traces of rust and preserving the original transparent lacquer that protects the metal surface. At the back of the foot we can see the engraved manufacturers name and address: BAKER- 244 High Holborn LONDON. Charles Baker was a mathematical, philosophical, optical and chirurgical instruments maker who founded a company in London in 1852. As stated before, the name of Baker can also be seen in the lenses and their sleeves, engraved in a lovely cursive lettering. The microscope mounts a micrometric adjustment system designed to move the sample plates without touching them with the fingers. The magnifier can be attached to the instruments side, just by the plate, so the user can lead and concentrate the light on the samples. On the other hand, special mention should be made of the amazing wooden case where the microscope and the accessory set can be stored. It is made of solid oak wood and the front side is decorated with a fine diamond design that combines four wooden veneers. The case preserves the original lock and key in working order, as well as the brass handle and knob. Outstanding and authentic, this antique C. Baker microscope is worthy of a great science and technology museum. Measurements: Microscope: Width: 8,6 in / 22 cm. Height: 17.3 in / 44 cm. Case: Width: 10.4 in / 26.5 cm. Height: 22.8 in / 58 cm.
