Antique R. & J. Beck binocular microscope in wonderful condition, complete and in its original wooden box. The microscope is dated in the late 19th century (circa 1890) and is very well preserved. It comes with a set of three lenses and two pairs of eyepieces, also original from the time. All the component parts and accessories are made of golden brass and preserve the original transparent lacquer. The stage is made of thick glass, a rare and attractive accessory that increases the instruments interest. The microscope works fine and provides a neat and clear view, being a fully functional piece. The brass foot bears the engraved manufacturers name, R. & J. BECK - LONDON & PHILADELPHIA, and the serial number 11786. This name is printed in black lettering in one of the accessories too. The box where the microscope and the accessories are stored is also very beautiful. It is made of solid mahogany wood and bears fine handmade dovetail joints. It preserves the original handle, lock and key in great working order. Inside it mounts different wooden supports to keep the accessories properly organized. This amazing antique R. & J. They were nephews of Joseph Jackson Lister, a renowned English optician and physicist who made important experiments with achromatic lenses. The firm made a wide range of optical instruments: microscopes, telescopes, trench periscopes, optometry lenses and camera lenses, among other. R. & J. Beck products were popular for its good quality and affordable price. One of their plate cameras was used by the famous British Army officer Thomas E. Lawrence, best known as Lawrence of Arabia. In 1880 the company started making the first true reflex camera. In 1895 R. & J. Beck became a limited partnership, and in 1947 it was listed as an exhibitor at the British Industry Fair.
