Fine Antique microscope signed by R&J Beck, made in England in1890 and in very good condition. This instrument is more than one hundred and twenty years old, is entirely made of brass and comes with its original storing case. The microscope boasts the classic design of turn-of-the-century compound models, with a stationary turret, a lens and an eyepiece. It remains in working order and can be used to watch samples. It mounts a horseshoe-shaped foot, also made of brass and with the manufacturers name (R&J BECK Ltd. LONDON) and the serial number 28601 engraved at the back. The brass is greatly preserved and keeps the original transparent lacquered finish which provides it with a lovely patina and has protected it to our days. The microscope comes with one eyepiece and three lenses with different magnifications. The lenses can be stored in their brass sleeves, which bear the engraved manufacturers name too. The whole set is stored in a wonderful solid-mahogany wooden box with a nice light-golden color and great handmade dovetail joints. It is in good condition and keeps the original lock-and-key set in working order. They were nephews of Joseph Jackson Lister, a renowned English optician and physicist who made important experiments with achromatic lenses. The firm made a wide range of optical instruments: microscopes, telescopes, trench periscopes, optometry lenses and camera lenses, among other. R. & J. Beck products were popular for its good quality and affordable price. One of their plate cameras was used by the famous British Army officer Thomas E. Lawrence, best known as Lawrence of Arabia. In 1880 the company started making the first true reflex camera. In 1895 R. & J. Beck became a limited partnership, and in 1947 it was listed as an exhibitor at the British Industry Fair.
