Amazing antique R & J Beck binocular microscope, made in England circa 1890 and with a complete accessory set including eyepieces and objectives signed by the maker. The microscope shows an impressive design with two-lens revolving nosepiece, double turret and original double-sided mirror. It is in working order, though in order to watch samples it is necessary to remove the nosepiece and fix the objective directly in the support. The rack-and-pinion system works well: when sliding it, the user must press the axe to avoid it slipping in some of the teeth. Even though, it is in good working order. The microscope includes the original prism, although it may need adjustments or cleaning because, although it allows a monocular view of the samples, the binocular view is not clear and dark. The item is composed of brass component parts and black-painted metal connectors and stands. The brass preserves the original transparent lacquered finish which provides the device with a charming old-time patina. At the back of the microscopes foot we can see the manufacturers name, R & J BECK LONDON, engraved on the metal with the serial number 5791. The whole set can be stored in the original solid-mahogany box, which has been compartmented and equipped in order to carry all the pieces in a stable and safe way. The case preserves the original brass handle, and the lock-and-key set in working order. It could really benefit from a thorough professional cleaning and an adjustment of the prism, this is something that the collector can consider over time, but overall, we are looking at a really spectacular exhibition piece, more than 130 years old. This superb antique R. & J. Beck microscope will shine in the best collection, standing out for its complete equipment and gorgeous design. Dimensions: Width: 7.48 in / 12.5 cm. They were nephews of Joseph Jackson Lister, a renowned English optician and physicist who made important experiments with achromatic lenses. The firm made a wide range of optical instruments: microscopes, telescopes, trench periscopes, optometry lenses and camera lenses, among other. R. & J. Beck products were popular for its good quality and affordable price. One of their plate cameras was used by the famous British Army officer Thomas E. Lawrence, best known as Lawrence of Arabia. In 1880 the company started making the first true reflex camera. In 1895 R. & J. Beck became a limited partnership, and in 1947 it was listed as an exhibitor at the British Industry Fair.
