Beautiful antique English microscope made in 1890. This instrument is in great condition and in working order. It comes in its original solid wooden case and was made by Swift & Son brand. The case also contains an objective and two extra eyepieces which accompany the microscope. The article is made of black-lacquered iron with brass parts, all of them polished and shiny and with no trace of rust or visible flaws. This microscope works softly and fluidly, and can be perfectly used to view samples. The curious design of the microscopes base is highly remarkable: it is quite particular, a U-shaped piece which is supported by a rear branch. At the front there is a printed inscription in white lettering with the name and address of the manufacturing firm: SWIFT & SON 81 TOTTENHAM CTR LONDON WC. The brands name is also engraved in the lenses, in two different kinds of letterings and just under the magnification number. The wooden case which stores the microscope and its accessories is also well preserved, and it shows beautiful and solid dovetail joints that provide it with even more aesthetical interest.Inside the case there are two paper labels attached to the lid. One of them bears a series of instruction for the microscopes maintenance, while the other is a hand-written card with what seems to be the name and address of the original distributor.Swift & Son brand was founded by James Swift, an optical manufacturer who started using the commercial name in 1877. In 188 the workshop established in 81 Tottenham CTR, London W, and changed its name to University Optical Works. Swift & Son brand became very popular in the late 19th century thanks to its petrologic microscopes. This amazing antique microscope is a real collectors item which will stand out among the most exclusive scientific antiques because of its elegance and great looks.Measurements: Width: 160 mm.
