Antique military sapper-firemans helmet model 1855/72, made in France in the 19th century and in good condition. The helmet belonged to a member of the French military corps which assumed then the fight against the fire. They were the Sapeurs-Pompiers or sapper-firemen, a unit which appeared in 1831 so French cities and villages could use army soldiers for this task. In 1875, a final decree was emitted in France in order to regulate the duties and the status of the Sapeurs-Pompiers. The helmet is a remarkable piece for its fine design and good condition. The golden surface looks uniform and even, and keeps the original polish too. At the front side, the helmet is adorned with a big embossed motif depicting a shield with a spherical flaming bottle inside. Framing the shield we can see some laurel and oak wreaths, just like the ones which appear in the French coat of arms. The helmet is crowned by an impressive big-sized parade crest, riveted to the top of the helmet and finely preserved too. The crest is decorated with a front volute and embossed classic-style side details which make up an appealing and flamboyant piece. At the left side of the helmet (viewed from the front), a welded metal piece supports an airy black horsehair plume. The plume is original from the time and has survived to our days in amazing condition. The helmet also preserves the original chinstraps, made of overlaying metal pieces attached to leather straps. This awesome antique military sapper-firemans helmet model 1855/72 will surely stand out in any showcase or as part of a collection of military antiques.
