This fine wooden organette is an American article made in Massachusetts in the late 19th century (1880). It is a 17-note Aurephone organette with solid walnut wooden box. The item is in strikingly good condition and works like the first day of use. It comes with five paper rolls with several songs each; it is possible to buy more rolls through Scmidts Rolls web site (http://www.music-rolls.com/). Inside the organette we can see the reproduction mechanism with its cylinders and tongs, as well as an instruction leaflet and a nice bright blue label printed in golden lettering. The Aurephone organette was patented in 1883 by A. H. Hammond and sold through the Tournament Music Co. We can see the manufacturers name printed in the blue label attached to the inner side of the organettes lid, together with the models name (AUREPHONE) and the city where the company was located (WORCESTER, MASS.). Just over this label we find the white instruction leaflet printed in black lettering. The mechanism is composed of cylinders, tongs, belts and crank is in perfect working order. In order to operate it, after putting the paper roll in its place the user has to close the box and press slightly a small lid located at the top: this element also regulates the musics volume. The organettes box is very decorative: it is made of solid walnut wood witn black-lacquered details. It stands on four small round legs and bears the organettes name, AUREPHONE, painted in golden lettering directly on the wood. The letters are quite elegant and are embellished with modernist-style fringes that adorn all the boxs sides. Overall, this instrument is a beautiful piece bound to stand out in the classiest room.
