Antique The Britannia Music Box. 37 Discs. Switzerland, Circa 1900

Antique The Britannia music box with a gorgeous design, made in Switzerland circa 1900. The box works really fine and remains in excellent condition, being a decorative and charming piece. The box is shaped as a small cabinet and makes it possible to exhibit in on a sideboard or hang it on a wall. At the top of the box there is a circular clock, also in fine working order. The music box comes with 37 The Britannia metal disks, well preserved and providing a lovely sound. The double-comb mechanism is complete and in good condition, emitting a great sound that preserves all its quality after being in operation for more than one hundred years. The whole mechanism is in perfect working order except for the speed controller which has been disabled. It does work, but somebody disconnected it in the past. So currently the music box works at full speed. All the speed regulators component parts are in the mechanism but one of them (a rubber cone) is upside down. It can be put into operation again but I have not done it for two reasons. First, there is always a risk of damaging some piece when a motor is dismantled. The second reason is that the reproduction speed is correct. So it is not worth taking risk of damaging something to put the speed regulator into operation again, as it really works fine. I did not touch it for that reason. Anyway, as I say, all the component parts are there and they could be put into operation again, though it is not worthy taking the risk. The music box designs shows off a neoclassic design which was very trendy in those times. The box is made of solid mahogany wood and is shaped as a cabinet, with a stylish vertical design and two folding front doors. The doors are embellished with beautiful marquetry inlaid details in very good condition and preserve the original lock and key in working order. At the top of the box there is an elegant crowning piece with turned pinnacles which houses the central clock. If we open de doors, inside we will discover the music boxs mechanism with the disk to be played. At the bottom, a wooden and glass door protects the motor that brings the mechanism to live.
