Striking antique marine compass made in the 1930s-40. This compass is in quite good condition and working order, and comes in its original solid mahogany wooden box. We have been told that in early times, the compass was part of the equipment of a ship which transported timber. Though we cannot confirm this information, the compass is equally an authentic and fully original piece which will surely have gone through many maritime voyages. The compasss bearing structure and case are made of brass; the dial is white with black printed details. It keeps the original inner fluid that makes the needle stop rapidly when pointing to the magnetic north, instead of remaining in oscillation. The compasss base is covered by lead and has been painted with shiny turquoise enamel, in good condition. The mahogany box that contains the compass is also well preserved and shows off fine artisanal dovetail joints, as sturdy as beautiful. It keeps the original sliding lid too. This gorgeous antique marine compass is a charming item, full of history and perfect to become part of a great collection of ship antiques. Measurements: Compass: 4.33 in / 11 cm Diameter. Box: 7 x 7 in / 18 x 18 cm.
