He was an apprentice for Jesse Ramsden; when he finished his apprenticeship, he founded his own business under the Cary name. During its existence, the firm was located in different points of the Strand street. After the companys foundation Williams brother, John (who was a cartographer), became his partner in business. Between both of them they made the company successful; it became a leader firm and exported instruments to remote places such as Russia or India. The even manufactured instruments for famous scientists such as the English chemist William Hyde Wollaston. After Carys death in 1825, the company kept on existing and was ruled by Charles Gould until 1853.
