This curious article is a systemwalking stick, a walking stick that is also a transverse flute. The stick, made of hemp root wood, is hollow and has a series of perforations that let it be played as if it were a flute. This interesting item dates from the early 1900s and is in quite good condition, with no broken or distressed parts. The wood is protected by a nice satin finish that enhances its natural color. As well as being a smart accessory, this walking stick is also a highly original collectors pieceThe stick shows the typical knots that usually adorn hemp wood. The curved handle is one of the most remarkable parts of this piece, with its inner side colored in a darker tone. This dark brown color is due to the action of direct fire, used to curve the wood and provide it with the classic hook shape. To do this, the cane must be soaked and exposed to the flames while the carpenter curves it with a metal shape. If we look closely at the handle, we will find a delicate decoration with four fringes composed of a series of circles and dots. These motives were engraved in the wood with a punch, creating a fine detail that enhances the items beautiful design. The stick shows a series of hole in all its length that turn it into the musical instrument mentioned before. The perforations are eight in all: one of them lets the user blow and the rest must be covered and uncovered with the fingertips in order to produce sounds. The transverse flute works perfectly and a good musician will be able to play delicate notes. The sticks end is trimmed with a solid cone-shaped piece made of darker wood, designed to reinforce the tip that touches the ground when walking. This amazing stick-transverse flute is a very original and charming item that will complete a good collection of curious antiques.Measurements: Length: 900 mm/35.4 in.
