This striking piece is a memorial baton made of two noble materials: solid ebony wood and sterling silver. It is an ornamental piece designed to be given as a present to a music-related important figure. The baton is very long (more than 20 inches) and remains in very good condition, showing no visible flaws. It is a very antique piece that dates from 1885, a gorgeous item original from the time and with a history behind. The solid ebony wood the baton is made of has been polished and turned to achieve a stylized and soft design. Its deep black color makes a wonderful contrast with the clear and shiny metal. The top and central decorative pieces are made of sterling silver fine details embellished with hand-engraved volutes and vegetal-inspired motives. Both pieces bear the hallmarks that testify for the silvers origin and quality, and also the silversmiths mark containing the initials J.H.R. The central ferrule also bears a beautiful hand-engraved dedication inside an elegant shield. The dedication reads: PRESENTED TO MR. A. F. BRIGGS by the MILL HILL MUSICAL SOCIETY. These words reveal that the baton was a memorial present for Mt. A. F. Briggs by the Mill Hill Musical Society. Mill Hill is an English suburb that currently belongs to the city of London. Under the dedication we can see the date of the ceremony: Februart 1885. The inscription is clearly engraved in the metal and is perfectly preserved, neat and legible. Last but not least, the whole baton is in amazing condition and displays its ancient beauty in all its glory. Its aristocratic design and singular elegance turn this antique baton into an exclusive piece, full of charm and personality. Measurements: Length: 20.2 in / 51.5 cm.
