This beautiful ebony baton with silver details is a very elegant piece, made in Newcastle, England in the late 19th century. The baton is in good condition except for a small dent in the lacquered surface. This detail, though, does not interfere in the attractive of the piece, perfecto to shine in a showcase containing a collection of music-related antiques. The silver details that trim the batons ends and the silver ferrule are all engraved by hand. The dedication engraved in the ferrule reveals that the baton was a present given by the members of a choir (identified by the initials m.n.c.) to the person that was probably their director. The name of this character is difficult to tell because of the complex calligraphy but it the inscription seems to read J. Bamerough. The ferrule has serrated edges and the engraved words are decorated with elegant curved lines and delicate hand-engraved flowers. The batons base is covered by another silver piece with the manufacturers name: Boyd & Co. Makers Newcastle. H. Boyd & Co. was a turn-of-the-century firm that advertised themselves as Wholesale and Retail Dealers in every description of Musical Instruments. The company was located in Newcastle, England. Its foreman was H. Boyd who advertised himself as Professor and Teacher of the English and Duet Concertinas. Mr. H. BOYD is also at liberty as a Soloist for Concerts etc. This baton is a good example of the quality of their products, often custom-made. The batons narrower end is also covered by a silver piece, flat and with no engraved decoration. The contrast between the silvers shine and the deep black color of the wood creates a gorgeous piece with a very special beauty. As ancient as classy, this memorial baton is an exclusive piece that every lover of music-related antiques will surely appreciate. Measurements: Length: 22 in / 56 cm.
