Stunning English commercial balance scale, made in the late 19th century (circa 1892) and in excellent condition. The scale is big in size, more than 31 in high and 24 in wide. It is a commercial scale, bound to be used in shops and stores. It comes with a complete set of bronze weights, very well preserved and quite big too. This piece is made of cast-iron and golden brass, boasting a lovely design halfway between industrial style and decorative arts. All its component parts look great, with no signs of rust or wear. One of the pans, white and flat, bears a classic logo and the manufacturer companys name printed on its surface: DAY & MILLBARD PATENTEES BIRMINGHAM. The firm was founded in 1700 and was located in Suffolk Street 118, Birmingham. In 1851 it was awarded in the Great Exhibition. In 1914 their production included all kind of weighing machines, patent agate scales, scale beams, etc. The article that we can see in these images bears an inscription engraved in the beam that reads AGATE BALANCE. One of the balance scales pans (the one stated before with the printed logo) hangs from a brass fork connected to the beam by a hook. The other pan is the standard type, made of golden brass and hanging from three sets of brass rods and links. These sets are connected to the beam by a closed ring. The central pillar is a brass cylinder supported by a cast-iron base with four solid legs. Over the pillar there is a beautiful iron filigree piece, with the beam and the plumb line hanging from its top. Last but not least, each weight has a top opening that let the user hang it from the left hook. As gorgeous as impressive, this amazing antique balance scale is a museum piece with a great decorative power. Measurements: Width: 63 cm. Height: 81 cm.
