Amazing memorial baton in excellent condition, with a striking beauty and made of high-quality materials. The baton comes from New Zealand; it was manufactured and dedicated in 1897. It is made of solid ebony wood whose great deep black color boasts an even, flawless and soft surface. The baton is decorated with sterling silver pieces, engraved by hand with decorative motives, initials and a complete dedication. The silver is also wonderfully preserved, and together with the black wood they make up a hugely beautiful and elegant article. At the top of the baton we find a silver piece with two intricate and stylish fringes. Between these fringes we can see a lovely hand-engraved motive with leaves and stems. The point also has its corresponding silver trimming piece, with great fringes and another engraved decorative detail too. At the center of the baton there is a third silver piece: in this case, as well as a decorative detail the silver bears an engraved dedication composed of names and dates in different letterings. The inscription reads: PRESENTED TO F. J. KING, ESQ. BY THE WELLINGTON WORKING MENS CLUB 1897. The stated inscription refers to a popular institution, the Working Mens Club. It was founded in Wellington, a city located in the New Zealand West Coast. In the 19th century, British urban working-class immigrants brought their own institutions to New Zealand, such as working mens clubs. This baton was surely a heartfelt tribute to one of the clubs members, F. J. King, Esquire. The baton comes in its original case. This ancient and exotic baton is perfect to be exhibited in a showcase full of the most beautiful and special antiques. Measurements: Length: 23.6 in / 60 cm.
