Antique Hand Carved Wooden Cigar Humidor. France, XIX Century

Lovely old-time cigar humidor made of solid hand-carved wood and in excellent condition. This small piece of furniture was made in France in the 19th century, and though being more than one hundred years old it has survived to our days in surprisingly good condition. The item preserves all its original parts and has been fully restored in order to show off the impressively good look that we can appreciate in the photographs. Though humidors are designed to store cigars in perfect humidity and temperature conditions, these items can also be used to store other things such pens. The humidor appearing in the images is fully made of oak wood. Its surface is protected by a fine dark finish that provides it with personality and character. The veneer that can be seen under the finish reveals that it is oak wood, a resistant and easy-to-carve material. The carving work that can be seen in the different parts of the humidor is really remarkable: it is made by hand, creating parallel bands that depict abstract rustic- and exotic-style fringes. We can see wavy fringes, scale-shaped fringes, groups of holes Nevertheless, the most remarkable part of the humidor is surely its top cover. Over the bands stated before rests a high-relief wooden bunch of flowers, beautiful and skillfully carved. On both sides of this detail we can see two carved bands depicting leather straps with their corresponding belts. Inside the humidor contains five trays, four of them sliding. They are all compartmented to store the cigars or the pens in perfect order. Last but not least, the lock and the key are original and remain in perfect working order. Sober, masculine and imposing, this antique humidor is a hand-carved piece worthy of a museum of arts and crafts. Measurements: Width: 10 in / 25.5 cm. Depth: 7 in / 18 cm. Height: 4.3 in / 11 cm.
