Modernist Fountain Leaf of Nymph and Flowers manufactured by G. Jones & Sons in England in 1873. Beautiful fountain made in glazed ceramic, with a rich polychrome in shades of green, brown and egg yellow. It represents a triple central fan leaf, bordered by typical aquatic flowers in brown tones and soft white flowers in a clear modernist style. The center is decorated with a beautiful wavy white longitudinal flower. The decorative flowers continue along the base of the piece, enhancing the horizontal plane of the piece. The whole composition is made with clear signs of realism, with beautiful and detailed flowers that are clearly related to the English Modernist style. The glaze is in very good condition, completely original and with the beautiful craquelé that we find in the totally genuine pieces. On the base, the maker's marks GJ appear clearly intertwined: G. Jones & Sons. The Arts & Crafts style is a variant of the well-known Art Nouveau, which emerged in Great Britain during the last decade of the 19th century. In those years, the main aim was to reform art and recover a simpler lifestyle, less conditioned by commercial imperatives. It seeks to capture the optimism of youth and a great respect for nature, which artists and craftsmen would transfer to all their artistic pieces full of stylized flowers and waves. This style will appear marked by a decorativism of sinuous and vegetal forms, a little more austere and demure than its French counterpart, which makes it possible to differentiate the English pieces from the French ones with relative ease. The mark on the English porcelain of G. Jones & Sons. consists of an interlocking G and J which is clearly seen on this modernist tray. This type of mark was used on English pottery during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The company began making pottery in 1864 as George Jones and in 1873 changed its name to George Jones & Sons Ltd. Beautiful and delicate modernist piece perfect to decorate a nice table.
