Pair of Precious Hand Illuminated Fans, made in the 19th century. Both pieces have a damaged or missing rod. The fan that appears in the upper area of the main photograph has the rod made of bone, with openwork shapes decorated with metal inlays. It consists of 16 rods of the same length, one of which has a small missing part. The nail or vitrola, made of mother-of-pearl, is shaped like a small spherical button and is attached to a metal ring decorated with plant forms, which ends with a tassel in gold and maroon. The country of this fan is made of paper and is decorated on both sides. This is the most decorative part of the fan, made to attract attention, painted with bright colors and extensively touched with gilding that runs along the surface. On the front side there is a court scene set in a country setting, occupying practically the entire space and executed with extreme exquisiteness. The scene seems to be a marriage proposal or wedding, where a gentleman genuflects to a lady richly adorned with a veil. The theme of the fans of the 19th century was very marked by the ornamental repertoires such as the columns that we find on the right side of the scene, spread in prints and compilations of studies. There is also a Louis XVI style chair, where a handsome young man sits courting a lady who stands with her back to the viewer, denoting naturalness and dynamism to the scene. On the reverse we find another court scene on a white background with three ladies, one of them seated, talking animatedly with a gentleman in a garden, with an architecture in the background. They are dressed in rich clothing, and one of them holds a fan in her hand. Although this scene is very beautiful, it is perfectly perceived that it is a secondary scene by the treatment of the details and the style. The fan that appears in the lower part of the main photograph has a mother-of-pearl shaft, with openwork shapes decorated with golden metal inlays forming oval medallions with flowers inside. It consists of 17 rods of the same length, one of which is slightly missing. The country of this fan is made of paper and is decorated like the other one on both sides. It is painted with bright colors and extensively touched with golden vegetal forms that run along the surface. The front side depicts a courting scene set in a country setting, occupying practically all the space. Two pairs of ladies and two knights appear, one of them kneeling in front of a lady who holds out her hand to him. On the reverse we find again a central court scene on a white background, where a couple witnesses the fainting of a lady, who is helped to avoid falling to the ground. This fan has slight tears in the paper and some humidity stains, as can be seen in the photographs, which however do not detract one iota of beauty.Undoubtedly a wonderful gift for a very special lady.Bone fan size: 27 x 50 cm Mother-of-pearl fan measures: 21 x 40 cm.
