Attractive wooden cash till, a typical model of the 1950s. The box is made of solid oak wood, and keeps its beautiful veneer and deep golden color in very good condition. The mechanisms and gear that operate the till are well preserved and the machine can be used as new. It has two rollers to print the name of the firm, and also a bell with a nice sound. The box also has the original key that operates the lock of the cash drawer. This is an English till made by Gledhill & Sons, a firm located in Halifax (Great Britain). The company was established in 1890 by mining engineer George H. Gledhill. The business succeeded and the company, which was supported by Gledhills three sons, opened several factories. During the World Wars, the firm also made military supplies. The till works with a mechanism of printing rollers. The paper comes out with the name of the corresponding firm printed on it. The charged amount must be hand-written on the paper, and through a transferring plate will be transferred to the inside paper roll so as the firm can have a registration of the amount. On one of the short sides of the box (which has a rectangular shape) we can see a sticker with the name and logo of the company, a rampant lion holding a compass and a key. We can also notice the different external parts that operate the machine, all of them made of polished silvery metal: the crank, the handles, the transferring device and the slot plates. The wooden box is made with nice-looking dovetail joints, which provide a solid union and are also highly decorative. The cash drawer has all its wooden compartments designed to house the money, and it has also a metal spring clip meant to hold papers and notes. If we lift the upper part of the box we will see the printing mechanism and the bell, but also some labels and plates attached to the cover. There is a card fixed with two screws which shows the name of the company and some suggestions to operate the till. Just under it there is another card with the serial number: 595283. There is also a rectangular piece of paper with a drawer showing the way the paper must be inserted in the mechanism. These details make of this cash till an attractive and complete piece, as decorative as interesting, perfect to become part of any collection of vintage machines dating from the middle of the 20th century. Measurements: 485 mm width x 245 mm height.
