Ivory and Tortoise Shell Box, Probably a Jewelry Box, ca. 50's 20th Century.

This small and smart box, covered with the finest materials (tortoise Shell and ox bone), is probably a jewel case which dates from the 1950s. The box keeps its original lock and inside is covered with dark purple velvet. The cover has a mirror attached, which makes us think that it could most probably be a jewel case. It is undoubtedly a fine toiletry item, full of vintage charm and a hundred per cent original. The box has a rectangular shape and is completely covered with tortoise shell plates, which show a nice dark red color with golden, brown and black shades. The beauty of this covering is enhanced by a series of carved ox bone plates, also decorated with black drawings, which garnish the whole surface of the box. These plates are attached to the box with round-headed metal nails. Some plates are missing and other ones are broken, but most of them are in good condition. The most remarkable pieces (because of the beauty of their carving work) are the ox bone filigree plates, fine rectangular details which are complete and in perfect condition, with no missing or broken parts. These pieces are framed by ox bone plates, carved with delicate vegetal motives which have been painted black in order to stand out. The box has the unmistakable charm of the pieces of those years and shows a nice classical look. It is a lovely toiletry item full of life, which has undoubtedly an interesting past. The beauty of the materials that cover this jewel case and its subtle attractive turn it into the perfect finishing touch for a dresser full of glamour and style, worth of belonging to the most elegant lady.
