Charming lithophane in perfect condition, dating from the 19th century and which has survived to our days almost like new, in spite of its fragility. A lithophane is a molded piece made of very thin and translucent porcelain. These objects were very produced mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries. They produce a curious optical effect: when a light is projected on them we can see a design or scene in gray tones (en grisalle). This pieces were highly popular, especially for lamp making, and today they are still considered charming and magical objects. This lithophane is signed and numbered at the rear, where we can see a stamp with an M and a number (1819), probably the year of making, with a crown on top of them. Under this symbol lays the serial number: 2280. When it is not under a light source, the lithophane is just a white porcelain plate with a framed embossed motive, with no colors or shadow. Nevertheless, when it is under the light it unfolds all its magic: then we can see a traditional scene of the era, full of subtle grades and grey tones. In this case, the scene depicts two women playing some game while sitting on the ground. A boy and a dog are with them. The boy is standing behind the woman on the left, and the dog is sitting in front of the boy. It is looking at him and with its back to the viewer. The figures are in the country, in a kind of romantic background which was very popular in those days. The whole picture is surrounded by a molded fake with decorative details in the corners. It is a image full of antique charm, which together with the originality of this surprising piece and its delicate making turns it into a unique article, worthy of the best collection. Measurements: 167 mm width x 200 mm height.
