Antique English Paper Table Top Paper Basket, S. XIX. Black Forest Wood. In Good Condition

Great writing slope made in England in the 19th century. This is an article made of Black Forest wood and designed to store cards, writing paper, letters, envelopes and documents. This writing slope has been perfectly restored and is in very good condition. The Black Forest wood keeps its deep dark tone, half way between dark brown and crimson, which provides it with a sober and aristocratic charm. This item is a beautiful antique, an artisanal object and a practical and functional piece, all at the same time. The outside of the writing slope is profusely decorated with hand-made carvings and reliefs. The patters depict floral designs and combine with fringes in the same style which frame them. All the sides are decorated with deep carvings, carefully performed and of a rare perfection. But the most attractive ones are undoubtedly the carvings of the front doors: deep reliefs which are almost free-standing sculptures, which come out of the wood creating intertwining stems, leaves and fruits. These reliefs depict fig plants with their climbing branches, characteristic leaves and grape bunches. The plants emerge from the bottom and they almost seem to be alive. If we open the writing slopes front doors, inside we will discover some compartments designed to store different sizes of writing paper, envelopes and cards. The inside is detached in five horizontal gaps, each one containing one, two or three compartments. The inner part of the doors is also carved with floral motives, just like the ones outside. At the bottom of the piece we find a slim removable drawer with a discreet golden brass handle. This writing slopes aristocratic look and its wonderful carvings turn it into an exceptional desk piece, perfect to stand out on the table of the most stylish study.
