Fine and sturdy kitchen scale made in England in the 1920s. It is a The Viking scale made by J. F. Thorton & Co. Ltd., a company that produced and traded in scales and weighing machines. It is wonderfully preserved and comes with a bronze weight set, complete and in great condition too. This was probably a shop scale: the weighs bear the marks left by official inspectors who verified that they had not been manipulated. Both the scale and the weights make up an attractive set; the harmonious design of t he machine and its lovely combinations of colors and materials are truly remarkable. At the scales base, just in the center we can see the original brand decal. It is a lovely oval-shaped logo with a Viking boat crossing the seas and the brand name THE VIKING in front of it. Framing the oval we can see the printed manufacturers name and location: F. J. THORNTON & CO. LTD. WOLVERHAMPTON. The scales body is made of cast iron, a sturdy and solid piece. It is covered by a nice matt black-lacquered finish in good condition and with scarcely any signs of wear. The golden decal is greatly preserved: it is complete and remains fully legible. The golden-brass pieces (screws and pan) are also finely preserved, with no traces of rust. As for the bronze weight set, it is composed of eight pieces and even the smaller ones have survived to our days. At the top of each weigh we can see the corresponding weight in grams, together with the inspection marks. Measurements: Width: 12.5 in / 32 cm. Height: 9 in / 23 cm.
