Antique Austrian chest or jewel case covered of Viennese enamels, made circa 1850 and in good condition. This is a spectacular item, with a high-quality artisanal work and a truly charming design. The case is shaped as a pavilion and is built in solid wood with a fine black-lacquered finish. The lacquered surface is fully covered of Viennese enamels in perfect condition, all of them original from the time and with no flaws, cracks or dents. The black lacquer and the light and bright colors of the enamels make up a beautiful effect, creating a special and lovely piece. At the top of the case and crowning the design there is a gorgeous ormolu figure depicting Neptune. The Roman god is sitting on a rock and lifts his trident, crossing his legs to form a triton tail. It is a superb small-sized sculpture, proportioned and elegant. At the figures base we can see a small flaw that does not interfere in the chests beauty. As well as this sculpture, the rest of the surface is decorated with more golden details that frame the enamels, crown the columns and adorn the black surface. The enameled plates that cover the chest inside and outside depict joyful mythological scenes. We can see small Cupids chatting or writing, muses inspiring writers or artists, delicate gallant scenes All the enamels have been painted by hand with firm strokes and many bright colors. The images are deep and balanced, revealing the hand of a talented artist. The chest has two front doors with a lock; the lock preserves the original key and is in working order. If we open them, behind we will find three small drawers with enameled decoration too.
