Amazing big ship barometer made in 1870 by the prestigious English manufacturer J. J. Hicks. This piece draws out attention mainly for its imposing presence and its excellent condition. All its component parts are original from the period and are well preserved. The barometer is in working order, but part of the mercury it should contain is missing. Nevertheless, the deposit can be refilled to make it work again. Even so, it is a highly decorative piece and with an impressive personality. The glass pane that close the protecting showcase are also original; one of them shows a small crack at the top, but this detail does not make the article less attractive at all. The barometers brass bottom capsule bears an inscription engraved in the metal in different types of lettering. It shows the manufacturers name, J. J. HICKS; his address and the barometers model: Nº 302. We can also read the name of the city where the instrument was made, London. James Joseph Hicks (1837-1916) started as an apprentice with London instrument manufacturer Louis Casella and in 1860 he had already become his foreman. In 1862 Hicks started a business of his own, specializing in meteorological instruments. He was a seasoned professional who knew how to use advertising, marketing and his contacts abroad. His company eventually employed more than 300 workers. The barometer that we can see in these images is a good sample of Hickss quality products. Its component parts are made of golden brass and glass, while the showcase that protects the instrument from temperature changes has a black-lacquered wooden structure and glass side panes. The rear pane is made of lacquered wood and has a mirror screwed to its inner face, perfect to reflect light and make it easier to read the measurements. The glass door preserves the original brass hinges that connect it to the showcase and can be easily opened and closed. As beautiful as antique, this sunning Hicks barometer is a piece worthy of a nautical museum. Tan hermoso como antiguo, este impresionante barómetro Hicks es una pieza digna de un museo naval.
