Fantastic Precision Balance made by Jos Nemetz in Vienna around 1900. It is in good condition as you can see from the pictures. Balance in silver plated metal and brass perfectly protected by the wooden box with four transparent glass sides, made to measure for the device. It has a door with vertical displacement of guillotine in the front part of the apparatus, that allows to accede in a fast way to the interior and to place the weights. The scale is basically composed of two flat plates located at the bottom of the central bar, where there is a metal tube with one of the sides closed to be able to measure in grain more easily. In the lower part of the central bar is the measuring ruler, necessary to know the weight of the product. By means of an elaborate weighing system, the desired amount of grain can be weighed as accurately as possible. On the sides, hidden behind a small longitudinal hatch, there are two weights marked with the letters R and L (right and left), which are responsible for lifting and stabilizing the scale. This is a completely original piece, as attested by the signature engraved on the central part of the balance. No part is missing and it has all the original springs and in good condition, which makes it a magnificent piece. It must be taken into account that since the beginning of mankind, man has always looked for a way to measure and weigh the goods, in order to carry out a fair barter as far as the distribution of food is concerned. When we talk about weight, the first thing we think of is a scale. The first things were weighed by means of the Roman balance or the one with equal arms like this example. This type of scales are the simplest, based on a system of balance between arms. There is a varied typology of antique scales, although in many cases, due to their incessant use, they do not reach our hands complete. This type of scale is based on a system of two equal arms with an axis of balance between them, where some pans are placed on which the desired goods can be placed in one, in this case the feed in the tube, and in the other the weights to calculate its value. Evidently, as time goes by and it becomes more and more necessary the accuracy in terms of weight, scales of greater precision are elaborated and with all kinds of formats according to the needs as in this case to measure grain, the inclusion of a closed tube in one of its sides that undoubtedly facilitates the measurement of the weight of this product.Beautiful piece in perfect condition, take a trip back in time to the technology of the past!
