The compass shows off an almost impeccable condition: it works perfectly and the printed information looks as clear and precise as when it was manufactured. It is embedded in a simple solid-mahogany wooden box, square in shape and with a hinged lid. When the lid goes down the compass locks automatically. The face is a rotary model and preserves the original glass pane. At the boxs base we can see the engraved manufacturers name, BARKER & SON BARKERS LONDON, together with the serial number 2057. This company was founded in London in 1848 to manufacture mechanical and electrical devices for military use.
