This is a magnificent pocket watch from the house of Pallas, made in solid silver, decorated blued with an IMPRESSIVE scene in two acts on BOTH sides, a scene that is SIGNED, and tells the story of St. Hubert, patron saint of Hunters, mathematicians, opticians and metallurgists. Our King Philip IV of Spain, a hunter king, had St. Hubert as his protector. The name and protection of St. Hubert was also taken by some Military Orders in the 15th century. This watch was made in Germany around 1900. We can tell the date by the style of the machinery and the contrasts in the silver. It works and will give you the hours perfectly for a lot of years. It is large in size, measuring 52 mm in diameter. Its machinery has 15 rubies and, as you can see, it is impeccable! You can find the corresponding solid silver markings on the dust cover. It's a fantastic watch, even if you are very picky about the quality of what you buy!But who was St. Hubert? Hubert of Liège or Saint Hubert was probably born in Toulouse in Languedoc, France, around 657; he died on May 30, 727, in Tervuren, Belgium. He is a Catholic saint, who is invoked as a protector against rabies and is considered the celestial patron saint of hunters, mathematicians, opticians and metallurgists. His feast day is celebrated on November 3.When his wife Floribana died giving birth to their son, Hubert retired to the wooded Ardennes and devoted himself to hunting. Soon a spiritual change took place in him. When he was hunting one Good Friday, while chasing a beautiful deer, it turned around and revealed a crucifix between its antlers, highlighted by luminous rays, according to the pious legend. The legend of the cruciferous deer appeared in medieval hagiography, repeating the legend already attributed to St. Eustace, a Roman martyr of the second century. By the 15th century, it was a legend widely repeated in many parts of central Europe (France, the Netherlands, Bavaria, Bohemia, etc.).This is a unique piece. All the pieces you see on my page are unique because there is only ONE and I CANNOT get one like it. We antique dealers don't have a big warehouse to get items from. We have to LOOK for them which means we have to FIND them.If you like the watch buy it. I will reserve it in your name, even before you make the payment. I want you to think about one thing. If you really like it and think about it too much someone will beat you to it and you will lose it forever. It happens every day. Do you remember the last time you lost something you liked because you thought twice about it? How did you feel when you went to buy it and it was already sold? Frustrated? Disappointed? Angry with yourself? Don't let that happen to you, be the first and get ahead of everyone else. Right now someone else may be reading these very lines!
