The majority of pocket watches ever made, 80%, were made of metal. Only 15% of the watches were made in silver and a ridiculous 5% were made in solid Gold. Very few of the latter are still going today, making them rare and collectible pieces, highly sought after by collectors, investors and enthusiastic amateurs. The most valuable and coveted pieces are those that are in perfect state of preservation. Within the latter, watches may or may not have an engraved front rosette. Watches that are not engraved are more sought after than those that are engraved. They are almost always simple rosettes. At the beginning of this title I said that this is a RARE watch. This watch has a DOUBLE UNENGLISHED rosette on the front cover, which makes it an unusual watch. Also its very large size is VERY exceptional being, this one being 57 mm in diameter. When you place it on the palm of your hand, the first thing you will notice is the pleasant coolness of solid gold. The watch takes up almost the entire palm of my hand and I am a man with large hands! The dial is cream colored porcelain with Arabic numerals and PERFECT, no chips or hairs. Specifically this watch dates from around 1900. The material is 14K solid gold. If you look at the photos, the gold counter in its covers is a crown surrounded by a circle, which indicates that it was made in Germany after 1888. But if you notice, there is a little lever next to the number four. This little lever is used to set the time. This system is typical of the late nineteenth century. From 1900 onwards, it was no longer used in favor of a new mechanism located in the crown of the watch, a system that is still used today. Therefore, the watch is dated between 1881 and 1910. Not to understate it, I say 1910, but I would date it closer to 1890.The machinery of the watch has 15 jewels and as you can see it is PERFECT. Despite the age of the watch it is very clean, bright and the watch is in perfect used and working condition. This is a unique piece. All the pieces you see on my page are unique because there is only ONE and I CANNOT get one like it. We antique dealers do not have a large warehouse to get items from. We have to LOOK for them which means we have to FIND them.If you like the watch buy it. I will reserve it in your name, even before you make the payment. I want you to think about one thing. If you really like it and think about it too much someone will beat you to it and you will lose it forever. It happens every day. Do you remember the last time you lost something you liked because you thought twice about it? How did you feel when you went to buy it and it was already sold? Frustrated? Disappointed? Angry with yourself? Don't let that happen to you, be the first and get ahead of everyone else. Right now someone else may be reading these very lines!
