Antique English Pocket Watch. Gold 18 K. French, Royal Exchange, London, 1859.

Superb English antique pocket watch with 18K solid-gold casing and signed in the dial and the movement by French. The watch works perfectly and has been cleaned and overhauled, so today it can be used just like when it was originally made. The hallmarks that mark the casing indicate that the watch was made in 1859. The name French corresponds to Santiago James Moore French, a prestigious watchmaker who worked in Royal Exchange Street, London between 1810 and 1860. His pocket watches are real collectors pieces and were sold in England, Spain and the EEUU. The watchs casing bears a fine and discreet guilloche decoration that covers both the front and the rear cap. The front caps inner side bears the engraved serial number 6066 and some hallmarks, one of them containing the initials AS. The silver dial is gorgeous and has gold Roman numerals and straight golden hands. We can also see the printed manufacturers name, FRENCH ROYAL EXCHANGE LONDON. Inside the rear cap we find the same marks and inscriptions that we could see in the front one. Under this piece there is a metal dustcap that protects the watchs movement. If we lift this cap we will see that the movement is protected by a removable metal lid that only lets us see the escapement. When we remove it, the movements beauty is displayed it is composed of delicately hand-engraved metal pieces with a decoration of volutes and curves. The non-decorated part of the movement bears the engraved inscription French, Royal Exchange, LONDON and the serial number we could see inside the caps: 6066. They are both hand-engraved with a fine cursive lettering.
