Gentleman's watch. Wind and set time with key (included). Semi Hunter type watch. With the inscription: 'By order of Her Majesty Queen Victoria'. Patent 4658 (see description), serial number 37865, manufactured and distributed by William Benson, 62-64 Ludgate Hill, London.Case: 53mm diameter, sterling silver, four leaves or lids, semi-hunter type pocket watch case with silver ball pendant and ring set at the 3 o'clock position and opposite the case hinge. The edges of the case are knurled. The silver pendant has the hallmark of solid silver and bears a stylized 'm' date letter mark, perhaps 1867. The pendant also bears a maker's mark 'CH' in a rectangular cameo indicating that it was perhaps made by Charles Hill of Russell Terrace, Coventry. The front cover bears Roman numerals in blue with a minute ring inside and a circular opening for reading the time on the dial without opening the case. On the inside of the cover can be found the English sterling silver lion and the date letter mark, in capital letters, 'L' corresponding to 1886.The J.W.B. mark in a cigar-shaped cameo is also present. The various caps are similarly marked and differ from the mark on the pendant. A pendant perhaps supplied by silversmith Charles Hill for Benson's use. Round white enameled dial with Roman numerals, and gilt double pike hands. The dial is signed J.W. Benson, London.Machinery: The machinery plate is marked, 'No. 37865, The Ludgate watch, J.W. Benson, Patent No. 4658 (see below), Best London make, By Warrant to H.M. Queen Victoria, Ludgate Hill London'.Condition:Case - Excellent. Dial: Very Good. Machinery : Excellent. Working Date Circa 1886Additional Notes:Patent No. 4658: Patent No. 4658 was for an integrated dust ring that also acted to hold the machinery. If you look at the movement, you can see that the faceplate is considerably larger than the top plate forming an extended lip around the rim, also the body (lower and just left of center) extends off the top plate of the movement, so it clearly cannot fit directly into a normal watch case.
