Measurements: Width: 45 mm.George Graham History George Graham, a pioneer of modern watchmaking, was an inventor and clockmaker who lived and worked in London, England between the 17th and the 18th centuries (ca. 1674 1751). Graham started working as an apprentice for a London clockmaker; his skill and talent were not unnoticed by the renowned manufacturer Thomas Tompion who hired him as a worker when he finished his learning period. With the trace of time, Graham became a partner of Tompion and later succeeded him in the business. He became a much better watchmaker than his mentor and was considered the best in his time. Grahman improved the cylinder escapement designed by Tompion and the dead-beat escapement created by the astronomer Richard Townelei (which would later be known as Graham escapement). In 1721, the inventor and clockmaker designed the first temperature-compensated mercury pendulum, a real success in the trade. In fact, by combining a dead-beat escapement with this system high-end clocks were made; these clocks were not surpassed in accuracy for more than 150 years. George Graham also made astronomy instruments for the Royal Greenwich Observatory and for the French Academy of Sciences.
