Antique Solid-Silver Pocket Watch Chain. Birmingham, England, 1915

Antique solid-silver pocket watch chain made in Birmingham, England in 1925. The chain is amazingly preserved and is embellished with a big amber-colored stone, probably a hessonite garnet. This is a semiprecious stone which can show a wide array of shades, between ochre and amber. It is a variety of the grossular garnet or grossularite, and it is commonly known as cinnamon garnet because of its fine color. In astrology garnets are related with people born in January. Its glow and high refractive index turn it into a gorgeous stone which provides this delicate chain with style and value. At one end, the chain bears the classic T-shaped bar designed to hang it from the vest. The bar shows a series of hallmarks: the mark of Birmingham, the silversmiths bar (with the initials B&S) and a lower-case q. This last hallmark indicates that the chain was made in 1915.
