Antique oignon (onion) verge fusee pocket watch signed St. Martin a Paris, made in France circa 1700-1715 and in very good condition. The watch works really fine and mounts gilt-metal oignon casing, with the bezel adorned with foliate embossed designs. The front of the bezel is decorated with embossed foliate forms, but the oignon-shaped back cover is unmarked and bears no ornamentation. There are no hallmarks. There is a square hinge and an aperture for the stem. With the round pendant and round bow at twelve. The front glass cap protects the gilt-metal repousse dial, with blue Roman hours in shield-shape white-porcelain cartouches. The minute track is composed of tonneau-shaped porcelain cartouches and bears black Arabic markers. The repousse gilt-dial center is designed with roosters/cocks surrounding a basket of flowers, with floral and foliate designs below. There are steel beetle-and-poker hands, and a winding aperture is between the three and four hour positions. The small pin near the six is used to open the case. Two of the hour cartouches have hairlines. The watch mounts a gilt brass verge/chain fuse movement, with plates pinned at the top of the pillars at the back plate. The brass pillars are tapered, four-sided and split. The rear plate has an interesting engraved and fenestrated balance cock with two heads of feathered birds in the design, perhaps matching up with that of the dial center. The balance bridge is screwed-down at either end, with extensions from the bridge. We can also see a silvered regulator with its own adjustment hand. The rear plate is engraved St. Martin a Paris. This gorgeous antique oignon pocket watch signed St. Martin a Paris stands out for its ancient age, original design and great working order. Dimensions: Width: 55 cm.
