This beautiful sterling silver chalice is a French piece made in the late 19th century and boasting a very attractive elegance. It is an ecclesiastical item in very good condition. The chalice is made of silver except for the base, made of silvery metal with embossed decoration and welded directly to the chalices stem. This detail, though, does not interfere with the chalices elegant look and makes it possible to maintain the beauty of the piece, turning it into an affordable and attractive item. Otherwise, the cup and the stem are made of quality sterling silver; there is a hallmark at the top of the piece that testifies for this fact. The silvery metal base is circular in shape and is decorated with a fringe composed of palm leaves framed by volutes. Each set of leave and volute is connected to the ones before and after it, creating a lovely decorative chain. The base is joined to the stem by a discreet welding, slightly visible though subtle. Over it a stylized stem emerges; its height turns the chalice into a classy piece. The stem has a big main central node, decorated with an engraved fringe composed of chained spirals. It also shows several secondary nodes, smaller in size and with different decorative fringes. Over the stem, the chalices cup stands with all its delicate presence. It is made of plain solid silver (gold-plated inside) and boasts a long flared shape. Close to the edge we can see the mentioned hallmarlk an octagonal motive with a winged profile head depicting a man, probably the god Mercury. The silver is in great condition and this fact turns the chalice into a very interesting piece for every collector of sacred-art antiques. Sober and elegant, this sterling silver chalice with silvery metal base is perfect to shine in the most complete showcase. Measurements: Width: 5.1 in / 13 cm. Height: 9 in / 23.5 cm. Weight: 240 g.
