This amazing sterling-silver cross is a real work of sacred art. This is a lovely and big-sized piece, with a small ring weld at the back that suggests the cross was probably designed to be worn as a pendant. The cross bears two hallmarks: the silversmiths mark and the silver proportion (800). At the back there is also a paper sticker with the following handwritten inscription: SCHWABISCH GMUND 1762 1786. Schwabisch Gmünd is a German city, and the years probably indicate the period of making. The magnificent and complicated design of the piece is powerfully remarkable. The cross itself is flat and is embellished with low-relief hand-engraved motives that depict decorative motives and symmetrical volutes on a dotted background. The arms ends show a lovely trim composed of volutes, more pronounced and with filigree parts. The decorative details and motives are separated and framed by horizontal and vertical lines that create a grid. This grid divides the cross and provides it with a beautiful look. The figure of Jesus Christ is equally gorgeous. The image is a small silver sculpture, fully realistic and with an undeniably delicacy. It depicts the Crucified Christ, covered only by a small cloth and with the classical INRI inscription on top. The face of Jesus shows a suffering expression, while his body suggests its pain with great realism and attention to detail. The figure and the cross make up a wonderful silver piece, as antique as beautiful. This striking antique silver cross is worthy of a museum of sacred art or a complete collection of religious pieces. Measurements: Width: 4.7 in / 12 cm. Height: 7.8 in / 20 cm.
