Impressive solid silver chalice, made in France in the 19th century (circa 1850). This magnificent cult item is very well preserved. It keeps its original case and bears the hallmarks of the silversmith who made it, André Favier. He was one of the most prestigious silversmiths of his time. His atelier was in Lyon and he kept it from 1805 till 1834. The peak of his art came in 1850, when he teamed up with his nephews, Jean Baptiste and Claude Favier. After the death of André, the hallmark was inherited by his relatives and the family became a dynasty of silversmiths. This particular chalice belongs to the most successful time of Faviers atelier. It is completely made of solid silver and bears contrasts all over its surface. The cup is 8 cm height and the rest of the piece is profusely engraved with floral and abstract motives, and also with Catholic symbols. This way we can see that the node is engraved with fine circular borders and zigzag motives, and also with flowers and leaves. The base is the most interesting part: it has the symbols of Eucharists bread and wine engraved on it, and it also bears the Sacred Heart (which symbolizes Jesus Christ), the triangle of God and the Bible. The chalice is in great condition, almost as beautiful as the first day. It is housed by its original case, made of cardboard covered with a black fabric which simulates leather. In the cover we can admire some details, such as the golden nails which surround it, the original lock and the handle, all of them made of brass. Its ancient age is the cause of the signs of worn that it shows, but even so it is an original case from the 19th century which provides the chalice with high interest. In essence, this attractive silver chalice made by Favier is a first class religious antique, which undoubtedly will increase any collections attractiveness. Measurements: 125 mm width (base) x 240 mm height.
