Outstanding solid-silver neo-Gothic chalice with paten, decorated with enamels and in excellent condition. The set comes from France, where it was made in the 19th century. Both the chalice and the paten are made of gold-plated silver and bear hallmarks that indicate the place and time of making. The chalice is a gorgeous piece with a medieval-inspired design and a remarkable beauty. It has an ample lobed base, decorated with three wonderful enamels full of color and delicacy. There is also a silver cross with a blue enamel finish. The enamels depict the three members of the Sacred Family: Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and Jesus Christ. Their beautiful colors turn them into small works of art that stand out for their fineness. The enamels are separated by engraved stylized flowers. The bases edge bears an engraved name in capital letters, probably the name of the former owner of the chalice: PIERRE LAURENT FRAPPEREAU. Over the base, the stem bears an important cross-shaped node decorated with fine embossed flowers. The cup is decorated with vegetal motives too, plants and flowers inscribed into pointed arcs that reinforce the medieval feeling of the piece. On the other hand, the paten shows off a very simple and elegant design. Its only decoration is the engraved acronym HIS, an abbreviation of Jesus Christs Greek name. The acronym is accompanied by an engraving that depicts a heart pierced by two swords. Its imposing design and great quality turn this antique chalice and paten set into a real work of religious art.
