Stylized antique chalice made of solid silver and silvery metal. The chalice comes from France and was made in the 19th century. The cup is made of solid silver and bears the silversmiths mark and the hallmark that identifies antique French silver pieces (the head of Minerva goddess). The rest of the chalice is made of silvery metal and stands out for its gorgeous decoration. This decoration makes a great contrast with the stylized lean silver cup. In general, this chalice is an ancient and beautiful piece with a very original design, full of symbology. The chalices base shows a series of images related to Christian iconography. One of them depicts a landscape with a cross in the center, flanked by turrets and small cottages. The following image shows a big bird feeding its chicks: it is a pelican, the Christian symbol of redemption and expiation. According to mythology, the pelican brings its dead chicks to life by hurting itself and spraying its blood over them, just like Jesus Christ opens his side to save men by feeding them with his own blood. The following image shows a bird sitting on a column. It seems to be a peacock or a phoenix, both symbols of resurrection. This curious image contains other elements, among them an axe and a ladder. According to the Christian iconography, the ladder symbolizes the ascension to heaven. These three images are separated by engravings that depict wheat stalks and grape bunches. Over the base, the chalices central node bears an engraving of a group of reeds that symbolize the Christians strength and flexibility. The original and evocative decoration of this antique chalice turns it into a fine and special piece. Measurements: Width: 5.5 in / 14 cm. Height: 11.4 in / 29 cm. Weight: 979 cm.
