Amazing 925-solid-silver chalice and paten set, made in Germany circa 1900 and sold in Madrid, Spain. The chalice is a gorgeous piece, wonderfully preserved and with an uncommon elegance. Both pieces bear hallmarks and inscriptions related to the silvers origin and quality and to the place where they were sold. The chalice is fully decorated with fine embossed motives that, together with its stylized design, create an original, singular and powerfully decorative piece. The chalices circular base is adorned by curved shapes that remind us of sea waves separated by vegetal garlands. The bases edge bears the following engraved dedicatory: DONATIVO DE DON INDALECIO GARCÍA ÁLVAREZ (In English: Donated by Don Indalecio Garcia Alvarez). If we turn the chalice upside down, inside the base we will see the German silvers hallmark, the silver proportion (925), the number 28353 and the inscription M.MATILLA MADRID for the shop where the item was once acquired and subsequently sold. Over the base there is a stylized stem shaped as a classic vase with the top decorated by three cherub heads connected by classic garlands. The cup is decorated in the same style as the rest of the chalice. It bears cherub heads too, this time located over wave-like shapes (this motive is similar to the one of the base). Between them we can see elegant garlands and volutes, and zones with a curious decoration that looks like fish scales. The cup that stands on top is made of lean silver and remains in great condition. On the other hand, the paten shows off a nice simplicity: its only adorn is a radiant Latin cross engraved by hand. It also bears the same hallmarks and inscriptions as the chalices base. A beautiful and quality item, this antique silver chalice-and-paten set will stand out in any collection of religious art.
