Amazing antique big-sized Christ carved by hand on real ivory with CITES certificate. This is a free-standing figure nailed to a sober and stylish cross made of solid ebony wood. The eggshell-white color of the fine figure makes a nice contrast with the dark black tropical wood; it also stands out for its expressiveness. The figure of Christ is dated circa 1800; it was made between the late 18th and the early 19th centuries. The cross itself was made later and is dated in the late 19th century. The sculpture is hand-carved to detail, with balanced proportions and finely performed facial features. The head of the Saviour is wondefully carved and we can distinguish each one of the manes and beards hairs. The cloth that covers the figures waist is also delicately performed with deep folding that look truly real. We can even appreciate the carved nails in hands and feet. At the top of the cross we can see the classic parchment with the acronym INRI, delicately manufactured on ivory and with carved black letters. Both the parchment and the figure are attached to the cross with iron nails that evoke the ones used in the Crucifixion. The ebony cross is a stylized and big-sized piece. The wood is in amazing condition, with no broken or torn parts. The cross has beveled edges that provide the piece with elegance and depth; its satin finish confers a subtle and elegant glow upon the wood surface. At the back of the cross we find the remains of an ancient paper sticker with the name and address of the original supplier, located in France. The sticker bears an inscription reading SPECIALITÉ DE CHRIST IVOIRE (Speciality of Ivory Christs) As antique as valuable, this big antique ivory Christ on ebony cross will stand out in any room for its elegant making and powerful beauty.
