Fantastic Antique Chalice in Solid Gilt Silver. France, Circa 1900

Striking antique gold-plated solid-silver chalice with medieval-inspired design and accompanied by the original paten. Both pieces are dated in the early 20th or late 19th century and are more than one hundred years old. They both boast a wonderful look, preserving the delicate gold-plated finish that embellishes the silvers surface in great condition. The chalice is decorated with colored carved crystals, embedded in the central node. It is a beautiful detail that enhances its rich design. The chalice and the paten bear the French-silver hallmark and the silversmiths mark; these marks testify for their quality and origin. The chalices base is shaped like a flower. It is a remarkable and wide piece, decorated with an embossed schematic Greek cross. Over the base, the stem of geometrical section is adorned by a solid node which mounts the crystals stated before. These crystals combine three colors: dark red, green and blue; they are all original from the time and remain in great condition. Crowning the chalice we can see the elegant cup, only decorated by a fine hand-engraved fringe at its base. The fringe is composed of intertwined vegetal-inspired volutes. The paten which comes with the chalice stands out for its lovely and original engraved decoration. It depicts a Greek cross decorated with vegetal-inspired motifs, schematic and symmetrical. Around the cross there is a ribbon, and grabbing this ribbon we can see the symbols of the four evangelists: an angel, an eagle, a bull and a lion. In the center of the cross there is an image of the Agnus Dei (the Lamb of God that symbolizes Jesus Christ). The patens edge is adorned by a delicate engraved fringe.
